What is corporate massage? Let’s start with the basics. Here is the medical definition:
Massage: The manipulation of muscle and connective tissue to enhance the function of those tissues and promote relaxation and well-being. Therapeutic massage can ease tension and reduce pain. Massage can be a part of physical therapy or practiced on its own. It can also be highly effective for reducing the symptoms of arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other disorders of the muscles and/or nervous system.
So corporate massage just brings massage into the workplace! As you can see massage has many proven benefits.
What is different about corporate massage?

Massages are usually shorter in duration. Generally they are 15 or 30 minutes in duration but the amount of time can be set to accommodate the specific company. You can read more in the article How Effective is a 15 Minute Massage to get an idea of how even in that short amount of time so many health benefits can be achieved.

Clients don’t have to travel. The massage therapist will come to your place of work and set up for the day. This saves a lot of travel time going to and from your massage appointment. This convenience is a huge time saver for the employee. People don’t always take the time to take care of their health. This opens up massage to more people who otherwise would not take the time to schedule an appointment and then go to their appointment.

Corporate massage is done right through your clothing. Employees can come for their massage and get right back to work feeling refreshed and energized. There is no down time other than the actual appointment. Its also a great introduction for employees not familiar with massage.

The boss usually pays! Corporate massage is a great way to say thank you to the employees. If you would like to recommend corporate massage to your boss you can go to our Letter to the Boss page and download the letter and present it to your company. We know the boss won’t be able to resist this once presented with the idea!

We hope that we have provided you with a better understanding of corporate massage and we welcome your questions!

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz! When was the last time you took a nap? Looks like this might be your month. August is National Napping Month!

Many countries see the value of a power nap. The tradition of napping or siesta as it is also called, has a long peaceful history. Taking a good afternoon nap is still quite popular in Spain, Italy and other countries of Southern Europe as well as in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

According to the November issue of the Harvard Health Letter, catching a daytime nap is a good way to catch up on the sleep you lose at night, sleep that may become more difficult as you age due to natural age-related decline in quality of your nighttime sleep.

Studies show that 10-20 minutes of sleep in the afternoon provides more rest than 20 minutes of more sleep in the morning. The body seems to be designed for this, as most people’s bodies naturally become more tired in the afternoon, about 8 hours after we wake up.

Unfortunately here in the United States taking naps during the workday is frowned upon and often grounds for termination. Getting massage during the workday is very acceptable though. Getting a 15 minute massage gives employees a chance to get off their feet and enjoy some down time to help them rejuvenate and have more energy for the rest of the day. Employees will also reap the many other health benefits of massage.

Massage relaxes your body helping you to sleep better in general. The relaxing effect of a massage stimulates the Parasympathetic Nervous System. The Parasympathetic Nervous System is most active during relaxed conditions which stimulates the function of the internal organs and maintains homeostasis or balance of the functions in the body.

Research shows that taking breaks between periods of productivity increases performance. A 15 minute massage session releases built up tension and clears the mind. National Napping Month is a great time to schedule a corporate massage event!

On Wed May 19, 2010 Junior Achievement held there annual Golfer’s Dream Day at McCormick Ranch Golf Club. Golfers enjoy a day of “All You Can Play” golf. Golfers qualify for this event by raising money for Arizona kids.

These passionate golfers play as many holes as they want the entire day. That’s a lot of golf and they have many sore muscles that could use a great massage! Kinkz was happy to set up on the golf course and at the reception to help relieve the golfer’s tired and sore muscles.

To find out more about Junior Achievement please go to their website. You can help out by volunteering or making donations.

Kinkz Corporate Massage is always looking to help with a great cause. If you have an event or silent auction please contact us to find out about donations!

The tournament honors the memory of Phoenix Police Officers Pat Briggs, killed in a traffic accident on June 20, 1990 and Beryl ‘Wayne’ Scott who was killed in the same manner at the same location on September 10, 2002.

At Kinkz we strongly believe in empowering our clients to play an active role in their health and well-being. If our clients are having issues we are happy to show them ways they can help themselves in- between massage appointments. These can include stretching techniques, relaxation techniques or possibly referring them to another practitioner if necessary. Our bodies are set up to heal and given the proper environment that can be accomplished. Here are a few techniques that we share with our clients for some common complaints.
Stretching techniques for shoulder and low back:
• Low back stretch- When you have low back issues you want to focus on stretching out the psoas muscle which raps around from the low back to the front in the hip area. You can kneel on the floor or put your foot on a chair or table if you have problems with your knees. Lean slowly into the stretch until you feel the stretch in your hips. Do this a few times on each side several times a day and you should get some relief from low back pain.
• Shoulder stretches- To get a great stretch in-between your shoulders stand in a doorway and put your arms on either side of the door. Lean forward and you should feel a great stretch. Another stretch for the shoulders can be done while you are showering. Let the warm water run in-between your shoulder blades to help loosen and relax the area. Then take one arm in front of you and place your opposite arm across to support that arm. Gently put some tension on the arm that you are holding in front of you while letting the warm water continue to run in-between your shoulders. Do several times on each side.
Do it yourself Reflexology:
• Headaches- There is a spot in-between your thumb and first index finger in the web area of your hand that can help to relieve headaches. You will know when you find it because it will generally be very tender. Put some pressure on this spot and do some light massage until you feel your headache subside. You can also use reflex points on your ears to relieve headaches. The ears are easy for us to access ourselves. Your earlobe represents the head in reflexology. Place your thumb behind your earlobe and two or three fingers in the front and apply pressure. You will sometimes feel an instant release from the pressure. Keep some pressure on the area and you can also massage some areas in the ear lobe that feel tender.
• Neck- Right above the earlobe is the occiput in reflexology. If you follow that slightly towards the top of the ear you will feel an indentation which represents the neck in reflexology. Work this area to help relieve neck soreness. In reflexology it is always same side, so if your neck hurts on the left side you will want to work the left ear in the neck area.
We hope that these techniques will be useful to you and help you to relieve some common discomforts. We welcome your feedback and look forward to continuing to assist you to great health!

Dry brush massage is a simple method of rejuvenating and revitalizing your skin and increasing its eliminative capacity. If you do this in the morning and the evening you can make a big difference in getting rid of toxins in your body. It is so easy too and takes only about 5 to 10 minutes.

One third of all body impurities and wastes are eliminated through the skin. When one is involved in a detox program of any kind, speedy elimination of toxic waste is very important. Keeping the skin pores wide open and the elimination through the skin as efficient as possible is an absolute must!

Daily showers, especially in conjunction with dry brush massage is recommended.

Hot baths, steam baths, saunas, should also be taken frequently during detoxing.

BENEFITS FROM REGULAR DRY BRUSH MASSAGE:

It will effectively remove the dead layers of skin and other impurities and keep pores open.

It will stimulate and increase blood circulation in all underlying organs and tissues, especially in the small blood capillaries of your skin.

It will revitalize and increase the eliminative capacity of your skin and help throw toxins out of the system.

It will stimulate hormone and oil producing glands.

It has powerful rejuvenating influence on the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin.

It will prevent colds, especially when used in combination with hot and cold showers.

It will contribute to a healthier muscle tone and better distribution of fat deposits.

It will rejuvenate the complexion and make it look younger, fresher and more velvety.

It will make you feel better all over.

It will improve your health generally, and help prevent premature aging.

HERE’S HOW TO DO IT:

Get yourself a natural bristle brush. A long handled one will make it easier to reach all parts of your body. These are inexpensive and you can usually find them in drug stores.

Starting with the soles of your feet, brush vigorously, making rotary motions and massage every part of your body.

FOLLOW THIS ORDER:

Feet and legs

Hands and arms

Back and abdomen

Chest and neck

Brush until your skin becomes rosy, warm and glowing. Five to ten minutes is an average time.

The best time for dry brush massage is upon arising in the morning and again before going to bed at night.

IMPORTANT TIPS:

Wash your brush every two weeks with soap and water and dry in sun or in a warm place.

For hygienic reasons, use separate brushes for each family member.

Avoid brushing the parts of your skin that are irritated, damaged or infected.

Don’t forget to brush your scalp too. Use a good bristle brush.

As for the face you can use a good alpha hydroxyl product and a facial brush.

The body actually breathes through the skin, absorbing oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide which is formed in the tissues. The eliminative capacity of the skin is demonstrated by the fact that more than one pound of waste products are discharged through the skin everyday. Give this simple detox a try and see what a difference it makes in your health.

More and more people are afflicted with the repetitive injury, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). CTS is not a disease but a musculoskeletal disorder brought on by overworked muscles in the neck, shoulder, arm, forearm and hand. Individuals at most risk are those using constant repetitive movements causing muscles in the arm to become sore and fatigued.

“According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Research the cost to businesses for health care and lost productivity of repetitive strain injuries is $11 billion.” -Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Let’s face it, computers are a big part of our lives and most of us spend a lot of time using a computer typing and using the mouse in a repetitive motion. Although computer work is often the culprit, is just one of the many actions that can cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. According to a Harvard Medical School publication, other causes of CTS come also from assembly line work in industries such as manufacturing, serving or meat packing. Other everyday tasks like washing the dishes, driving a car and even turning the pages of a magazine all require you to use your wrist. Think how difficult any of these actions would be if your wrists and fingers hurt.

The good news is that research studies show that massage can help and many companies that utilize on-site massage see a huge difference in the reduction of repetitive injuries of their employees. Massage Therapists use specific techniques that focus on the wrist flexors or the carpal tunnel region. By concentrating on all the muscles and tendons involved, the therapist can break up the pain pattern bringing relief to the sufferer. In addition to working the areas of the carpal tunnel region it is also important to address all the regions of the upper extremities and the neck. Often muscles in the wrist turn out to be the “blow out” point.

“A 2004 study conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida concluded that massage therapy eases the symptoms of CTS. The study found that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome patients receiving massage reported significantly less pain, reduced symptoms and improved grip strength than those who did not receive massage.” -Touch Research Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine, Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies.

Massage therapy has proven to alleviate the pain of CTS and prevent further deterioration. When massage is offered at the workplace it can really affect a company’s bottom line by reducing repetitive injuries. Utilizing massage in the workplace is an inexpensive route that companies can take to make a big difference. It is a low cost program with high return.

How many of us are really conscious of the power of touch. It seems that we go through a good part of our day with little to no human contact. We spend so much time on the computer or the phone and get so wrapped up in getting our work done and racing to the next event in our lives. Here is some food for thought to consider about the power of touch.

Touch is TEN times stronger than verbal communication and it allows us to release old pains and emotions stored in muscles. The Touch Research Institute (TRI) at the University of Miami School of Medicine devotes its studies solely to the effects of touch therapy.

TRI says it has carried out more than 100 studies in touch and found evidence of significant effects, including faster growth in premature babies, reduced pain, decreased autoimmune disease symptoms, lowered glucose levels in children with diabetes, and improved immune systems in people with cancer. It really is incredible that human touch can have such an impact on all of these conditions.

When you think about it, it really is human instinct. When people hurt themselves they instinctively touch the area that is affected. When a child gets hurt a parent will “kiss it to make it feel better”. Just the comfort of someone touching a child where they are hurt generally calms them down.

Science tells us that touch triggers the release of brain endorphins, which work as natural pain relievers. Touching can make your immune system stronger and your mood lighter. The more you are touched the better you feel. Touching is a necessity for a healthy life.

A fifteen minute or half-hour massage can boost your immune system and lessen stress making you feel calmer and happier. For some people who live alone, their massage might be the only time that they experience human touch. Massage is so much more than relieving sore muscles, it affects you on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.
